I have been drawing in my mind for my whole life. But the actual marks on paper stopped sometime after third grade, not to begin again until I met my muse, Deidre O’Brien. Even then, work got in the way and my artistic endeavors happened in short bursts once or twice a year.
After I retired I began talking art courses, for many years staying within the comfort zone of my pencils and charcoal. Wanting to introduce color into my work, I moved to water color with spectacularly poor results. This brought me to pastels which allowed me to experiment with color while maintaining control, providing temporary satisfaction. During that time I painted landscapes and still life exclusively-- interesting but not fulfilling.
Fortunately, when we relocated to the Boston area I began studying with Carmella Yager at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Carmella had a strong influence on my development, encouraging me to venture into portraiture and challenging me to use oils. Most of all, she gave me permission to be comfortably uncomfortable for which I am forever grateful.

On the first day of my first class with Bob Collins at the Danforth Museum School, I knew I had found what I was searching for--a method for organizing a painting so I could abstract it in a way that makes sense to me. This allowed me to paint how I need to paint. Abstraction provides the vehicle. Because of Bob’s approach, his classes resound with creativity and high energy--extraordinarily motivating and freeing to me.
